“Resolved: The State of Feelings, Feelings regarding States and the Emotional Response” by John Stuart
For centuries philosophers, psychologists, and scientists have debated over the terms and definitions regarding feelings, emotions and states. What perplexes me is that throughout history these terms have been used interchangeably. If that is not enough to confuse someone, try looking the terms up in the dictionary! Within each of their respective definitions contains a direct reference to the other term! So then, could it be that feelings are emotions and states; that emotions are feelings and states; and states are feelings and emotions? Or, are we just caught up in semantics? There is argument to prove that they are indeed similar, but if they are not wholly the same then it is safe to conclude that they are all separate entities, thus warranting their own explanation. Although feelings, emotions, and states are inter-related, they have distinct characteristics that distinguish one from the other, which I will herein discuss. (more)
